As the chill of winter begins to fade, March brings the first stirrings of life in our gardens. From pruning dormant branches to tidying up flower beds and sowing the seeds of future blooms, March is a busy time for us gardeners as we begin the spring season.
Contents
Flowers
- Sow hardy annuals in pots or directly outside for colourful displays
- Plant sweet peas, herbaceous perennials and summer flowering bulbs outdoors
- Plant summer bedding plants inside until the last of the frosts have left
- Pot Up cuttings of tender perennials
- Mulch beds
- Dead-head winter flowering pansies and daffodils
- Plan borders and buy seeds as needed
Trees & Shrubs
- Plant hedges, trees and shrubs for the year
- Plant evergreen shrubs and trees toward the end of the month
- Mulch hedges, trees and shrubs
- Tie up damaged branches on bushes
- Checkup on and adjust tree stakes as necessary
- Remove weeds from young trees and hedges
General Jobs
- Pot on and prick out seedlings as needed
- Open doors or windows of greenhouses on warmer days to increase ventilation
